Collingwood, a sleepy gold-mining town at the northern tip of the South Island's Golden Bay, feels like the end of the road — and that's its charm. Hemmed by the Tasman Sea and the bush-clad Kahurangi National Park, this is a place where time slows down. The main street is a collection of heritage buildings, a couple of pubs, and a bakery that knows its pies. It's the perfect launchpad for exploring Farewell Spit, a 35km sandspit that's a bird sanctuary and geological oddity, or for tramping in the park.
Highlights & What to See
- Farewell Spit & Cape Farewell — New Zealand's northernmost point, a dramatic sandspit with towering dunes and a gannet colony. Join a guided tour (the only way to access the spit) for an otherworldly experience.
- Kahurangi National Park — A vast wilderness of limestone karst, alpine meadows, and pristine rivers. The Heaphy Track starts near here, but shorter walks like the Te Waikoropupu Springs (Pupu Springs) are equally rewarding.
- Collingwood's Gold Mining Heritage — Visit the Collingwood Museum or poke around the old quartz stamper battery ruins. The town was once a boomtown, and you can still pan for gold in the Aorere River.
- Wharariki Beach — A wild, windswept beach with sea arches, seal colonies, and the iconic archway rock formation. It's a 20-minute drive from Collingwood, then a 20-minute walk.
- Te Waikoropupu Springs — Some of the clearest water in the world, with amazing visibility. A short boardwalk loop makes it accessible.
Suggested Time to Spend
Collingwood itself is tiny — you can explore the town in an hour. But to really experience the area, plan for two full days: one for Farewell Spit (half-day tour plus beach time) and one for Kahurangi walks or Wharariki Beach. If you're a tramper, budget three days for a section of the Heaphy Track or other multi-day walks.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Takaka — The funky, artsy hub of Golden Bay, with galleries, organic cafés, and the famous Labyrinth Rocks. It's a 30-minute drive south.
- Abel Tasman National Park — New Zealand's smallest national park, with golden sand beaches and the Abel Tasman Coast Track. It's about 1.5 hours from Collingwood via Takaka.
- Nelson Lakes National Park — A stunning alpine park with beech forests and glacier-carved lakes, great for tramping and kayaking. A 2-hour drive east.
- Farewell Spit Nature Reserve — The spit itself is a must-do; combine it with a visit to the Cape Farewell lookout.
