Christchurch, the largest city in the South Island, is a vibrant blend of English heritage, contemporary culture, and stunning natural surroundings. Rebuilt with creativity and resilience after the 2010–2011 earthquakes, the city now buzzes with innovative architecture, street art, and a thriving food scene. From punting on the Avon River to exploring the nearby Banks Peninsula, Christchurch offers a compelling urban base for your West Coast journey.
Highlights & What to See
- Christchurch Botanic Gardens – Stroll through 21 hectares of lush gardens, with the tranquil Avon River winding through. Perfect for a picnic or a peaceful morning.
- Canterbury Museum – Dive into the region's natural and social history, including Antarctic exploration and Māori taonga (treasures). Admission is free.
- Transitional Cathedral (Cardboard Cathedral) – An iconic symbol of the city's post-earthquake rebuild, designed by Shigeru Ban. Its cardboard tubes and timber frame are a must-see.
- Quake City – A moving exhibition that tells the story of the 2010–2011 earthquakes through personal accounts and artefacts. Located in the Re:START container mall.
- Punting on the Avon – Glide along the Avon River in a traditional flat-bottomed boat, with a guide sharing tales of the city's history. A quintessential Christchurch experience.
- New Brighton Beach & Pier – A short drive from the city centre, this long sandy beach is great for a walk, fish and chips, and watching the sunset over the Pacific.
- Lyttelton – A historic port town just through the tunnel, known for its eclectic shops, galleries, and the Saturday farmers' market. The views from the top of the Lyttelton Volcano are spectacular.
Suggested Time to Spend
Give Christchurch at least two full days to experience its main attractions and soak up the café culture. If you're on a self-drive itinerary, consider using it as a rest day between West Coast adventures – the city offers excellent dining, accommodation, and easy access to the Banks Peninsula. A morning in the Botanic Gardens and Canterbury Museum, followed by an afternoon punting and exploring the city centre, is a solid plan. Add a day trip to Lyttelton or Akaroa if you have extra time.
