Christchurch, the largest city in the South Island, is a vibrant blend of English heritage, contemporary culture, and stunning natural surroundings. Rebuilt with creativity and resilience after the 2010–2011 earthquakes, the city now buzzes with innovative architecture, street art, and a thriving food scene. From punting on the Avon River to exploring the nearby Banks Peninsula, Christchurch offers a compelling urban base for your West Coast journey.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Give Christchurch at least two full days to experience its main attractions and soak up the café culture. If you're on a self-drive itinerary, consider using it as a rest day between West Coast adventures – the city offers excellent dining, accommodation, and easy access to the Banks Peninsula. A morning in the Botanic Gardens and Canterbury Museum, followed by an afternoon punting and exploring the city centre, is a solid plan. Add a day trip to Lyttelton or Akaroa if you have extra time.
