Cape Foulwind, a rugged headland on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island, offers a dramatic meeting of land and sea. Named by Abel Tasman for its blustery conditions, this windswept promontory is now celebrated for its wild beauty, a historic lighthouse, and a thriving colony of New Zealand fur seals. The Cape Foulwind Walkway provides an easy, rewarding coastal walk with stunning views of the Tasman Sea and the Southern Alps.
Highlights & What to See
- Cape Foulwind Walkway: A 3.4 km (one-way) coastal track that takes about 1.5 hours return. It winds along clifftops, passing the historic lighthouse and offering panoramic views of the coastline and mountains.
- New Zealand Fur Seal Colony: A large, easily accessible seal colony near the walkway's end. Best viewed from the designated platform; seals are present year-round, with pups born from November to January.
- Tauranga Bay: A beautiful sandy beach just south of the cape, perfect for a picnic or a stroll. The surf here can be powerful, so swimming is not advised.
- Cape Foulwind Lighthouse: Built in 1926, this iconic white lighthouse stands sentinel on the cliffs. The surrounding area is a great spot for whale watching during migration seasons (June to October).
- Coastal Views and Photography: The dramatic cliffs, pounding surf, and vast horizons make this a paradise for photographers, especially at sunset.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 2–3 hours to fully enjoy Cape Foulwind. This includes the walkway walk, time at the seal colony, and photo stops. It's an easy half-day trip from Westport (about 15 minutes' drive) and can be combined with other West Coast attractions. The walkway is suitable for most fitness levels, with some gentle inclines.
