Canterbury

Canterbury is a vast and varied region on New Zealand's South Island, stretching from the rugged Southern Alps to the sweeping Pacific coastline. Its centrepiece is the lively city of Christchurch, but the real allure lies in the dramatic landscapes beyond: braided rivers, high-country sheep stations, and the turquoise lakes of the Mackenzie Basin. Whether you're chasing alpine adventures, starry skies, or a taste of rural Kiwi life, Canterbury delivers with understated grandeur.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

To do justice to Canterbury's diversity, allow at least 5–7 days. Spend 2 days in Christchurch, then base yourself in the Mackenzie Basin (Tekapo or Twizel) for 3 days to explore Mount Cook and the lakes. Add a day each for Kaikōura and Akaroa if your itinerary allows. The region is easily combined with a self-drive loop from Christchurch to Queenstown via the Alps.
