Arthurs Pass is a thrilling alpine gateway straddling the Southern Alps, where the road twists through dramatic river valleys and ancient beech forests. This small village is the launchpad for some of New Zealand's most accessible glacier valleys, alpine walks, and the legendary TranzAlpine train journey. The air is crisp, the birdlife abundant, and the sense of wilderness palpable.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend a full day exploring the walks and viewpoints, or stay overnight to catch the early morning light. If you're driving the spectacular route from Christchurch to the West Coast, budget at least 2–3 hours for short walks and photo stops. For hikers, a longer stay of 1–2 nights allows you to tackle the multi-day Mingha-Deception tramping route or summit Avalanche Peak.
