The Alex Knob Track is one of the West Coast's most rewarding day hikes, offering jaw-dropping aerial views of the Franz Josef Glacier and the surrounding Southern Alps. This challenging 8-10 hour return trek climbs through lush rainforest and alpine scrub to a rocky summit at 1,303 metres. The payoff is a front-row seat to the glacier's immense icefall, framed by the wild Tasman Sea. It's a serious tramp requiring fitness and good weather, but for those who make the effort, it's an unforgettable alpine experience.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow a full day for the Alex Knob Track: plan for 8–10 hours return, depending on fitness and conditions. Start early to avoid afternoon cloud cover, which often obscures the views. The track is steep and relentless, so pace yourself and carry plenty of water and food. Many hikers combine it with a rest day in Franz Josef village before or after.
