The Abel Tasman Coast Track is New Zealand's most popular Great Walk, a stunning coastal trail that winds through golden sand beaches, lush native forest, and granite cliffs along the northern edge of the South Island. With turquoise waters lapping against pristine coves, this track offers a quintessential Kiwi outdoor experience that combines gentle hiking with opportunities for kayaking, swimming, and wildlife spotting.
Highlights & What to See
- Anchorage & Torrent Bay – Two of the most beautiful beaches along the track, perfect for a swim or picnic.
- Cleopatra's Pool – A natural rock water slide accessible from the inland track near Marahau.
- Bark Bay & Onetahuti Beach – Stunning tidal estuaries and expansive golden sands.
- Tonga Quarry & Totaranui – A historic quarry site and the largest beach in the park, a hub for camping.
- Separation Point & Whariwharangi Bay – The northernmost section with dramatic cliffs and seal colonies.
- Water Taxi & Kayak Adventures – Combine hiking with a boat ride or sea kayaking to explore hidden coves.
Suggested Time to Spend
The full 60 km track takes 3–5 days to walk one-way, but many visitors opt for day walks from Marahau or Kaiteriteri. A classic half-day hike is from Marahau to Anchorage (return by water taxi), while a full-day option goes from Marahau to Bark Bay. For a multi-day trip, plan 3 days to walk from Marahau to Totaranui, or 4–5 days to complete the entire track to Wainui. Book huts or campsites well in advance during peak season (November–April).
