The West Coast Wine Trail is a delightful journey through the unexpected vineyards of New Zealand's wild western side. While the region is famed for glaciers and rainforests, its boutique wineries produce cool-climate wines with character, particularly Pinot Noir and aromatic whites. The trail winds through scenic landscapes, offering tastings at family-run cellar doors where you can chat with winemakers and soak in views of the Southern Alps.
Highlights & What to See
- Monteith's Brewing Co. – Though not a winery, this Greymouth brewery is a must-stop for craft beer lovers, with a tasting room and brewery tour.
- Franz Josef Wine & Art – A cellar door near the glacier, pairing local wines with art exhibits and platters of local cheeses.
- Hokitika's Wildfoods Festival – If timing aligns, this quirky March event celebrates local food and wine, with plenty of West Coast drops to sample.
- Buller Gorge Wine – A small vineyard near Reefton, known for its organic practices and stunning river views.
- West Coast Wine Growers Association – Look for their trail map; many vineyards offer cellar door tastings by appointment, so plan ahead.
Suggested Time to Spend
Dedicate at least a full day to explore the trail at a leisurely pace. Start from Greymouth and work south, stopping at three to four cellar doors. If you're self-driving, you can easily combine a morning of tasting with an afternoon glacier walk or a visit to Hokitika Gorge. For a more immersive experience, consider an overnight stay in Hokitika or Franz Josef.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
