The West Coast Wine Trail is a delightful journey through the unexpected vineyards of New Zealand's wild western side. While the region is famed for glaciers and rainforests, its boutique wineries produce cool-climate wines with character, particularly Pinot Noir and aromatic whites. The trail winds through scenic landscapes, offering tastings at family-run cellar doors where you can chat with winemakers and soak in views of the Southern Alps.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Dedicate at least a full day to explore the trail at a leisurely pace. Start from Greymouth and work south, stopping at three to four cellar doors. If you're self-driving, you can easily combine a morning of tasting with an afternoon glacier walk or a visit to Hokitika Gorge. For a more immersive experience, consider an overnight stay in Hokitika or Franz Josef.
