Wanaka Lakefront is the serene, postcard-perfect edge of Lake Wānaka, where the Southern Alps rise dramatically behind clear turquoise waters. This is the heart of Wanaka's outdoor lifestyle — a place for lazy strolls, lakeside picnics, and that iconic shot of the lone willow tree in the shallows. The lakefront promenade is dotted with benches, grassy lawns, and a laid-back vibe that feels a world away from Queenstown's hustle.
Highlights & What to See
- #ThatWanakaTree – The famous solitary willow in the lake, best photographed at sunrise or sunset for soft light and fewer crowds.
- Lakeside Walk & Cycle Path – A paved trail running from the town centre to the lakefront's eastern end, perfect for a gentle bike ride or a sunset stroll.
- Pembroke Park – A leafy green space with a playground, skate park, and picnic tables, ideal for families.
- Wanaka Lakefront Reserve – The main grassy area with benches and boat ramps, offering uninterrupted views of the lake and mountains.
- Water Sports – Hire a kayak, stand-up paddleboard, or small boat from the lakefront to explore the lake's calm waters.
- Eely Point – A short walk north along the lakefront to a rocky point with excellent swimming and views back over the town.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 hours enjoying the lakefront on foot, but you could easily linger for half a day if you combine a walk with a picnic, a coffee at one of the nearby cafés, or a paddle on the lake. For photographers, plan to arrive at least 30 minutes before sunrise or sunset to capture the best light on the mountains and the Wanaka Tree. If you're cycling the lakefront trail, allow 45 minutes to an hour one-way from town to the far end.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Wanaka Town Centre – Just a block back from the lake, with boutique shops, galleries, and excellent eateries like Federal Diner and Big Fig.
- Roys Bay & Eely Point – Extend your lakeside walk north to these quieter spots for swimming and panoramic views.
- Mount Iron Track – A 1.5-hour loop hike from the edge of town offering sweeping views over Wanaka and the lake.
- Puzzling World – A quirky maze and illusion museum a short drive from the lakefront, great for families.
- Wanaka Beerworks – A microbrewery with a tasting room just off the main street, perfect for a post-walk refreshment.
