Twizel is a small, purpose-built town on the edge of the Mackenzie Basin, surrounded by the dramatic peaks of the Southern Alps and the turquoise waters of Lake Pukaki. Originally established to house workers building the hydroelectric power scheme, it has evolved into a laid-back base for exploring the Aoraki Mount Cook region and the surprisingly vibrant food scene of this high-country area.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Twizel itself is small, so most visitors use it as a base for 2–3 days. Spend one day exploring Lake Pukaki and Mount Cook, another on a cycle or walk around the hydro canals, and a third heading south to the Waitaki Valley or Ohau. The town’s cafés and restaurants – especially the artisan bakeries and salmon purveyors – are worth lingering over for a relaxed afternoon.
