Twizel is a small, purpose-built town on the edge of the Mackenzie Basin, surrounded by the dramatic peaks of the Southern Alps and the turquoise waters of Lake Pukaki. Originally established to house workers building the hydroelectric power scheme, it has evolved into a laid-back base for exploring the Aoraki Mount Cook region and the surprisingly vibrant food scene of this high-country area.
Highlights & What to See
- Lake Pukaki Viewpoint – The iconic outlook over the milky-blue lake toward Aoraki Mount Cook is a must-photograph stop; the colours are most intense in late afternoon.
- Twizel River Trail – A flat, easy walk or cycle along the braided river, offering big sky views and a chance to spot black stilts (kakī) in the wetlands.
- High Country Salmon – Just north of town, this working salmon farm lets you feed the fish and buy freshly smoked salmon – grab a bagel for a perfect picnic lunch.
- Aoraki Mount Cook National Park – A 40-minute drive to the village at the foot of New Zealand’s highest peak; don’t miss the short Hooker Valley Track for glacier views.
- Ohau Ski Field – A local’s favourite for uncrowded slopes, offering stunning views over the Mackenzie Basin from its runs.
Suggested Time to Spend
Twizel itself is small, so most visitors use it as a base for 2–3 days. Spend one day exploring Lake Pukaki and Mount Cook, another on a cycle or walk around the hydro canals, and a third heading south to the Waitaki Valley or Ohau. The town’s cafés and restaurants – especially the artisan bakeries and salmon purveyors – are worth lingering over for a relaxed afternoon.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Lake Ohau – A quieter, less developed lake with excellent fishing and a ski field, just 30 minutes away.
- Omarama – Famous for clay cliffs, glider flying, and the hot pools at Omarama Hot Tubs – a perfect post-hike soak.
- Lake Tekapo – The Church of the Good Shepherd and the dark-sky reserve are an easy 45-minute drive north.
- Lindis Pass – The scenic route to Wanaka, with a dramatic alpine crossing and short tussock walks.
