Few short walks pack such a visceral punch as the Chasm Walk, a brief but thunderous detour on the road to Fox Glacier. In just 20 minutes you'll find yourself peering into a narrow gorge where the Fox River has carved surreal, swirling rock sculptures over millennia. The roar of water funnelling through the chasm is almost overwhelming, and the contrast between the dense rainforest and the raw, sculpted stone is pure West Coast drama.
Highlights & What to See
- The Chasm itself – a natural rock amphitheatre where the river has bored smooth potholes and fluted walls. The viewing platform offers a vertiginous look into the plunge pool below.
- Rainforest approach – the short track winds through lush podocarp forest, with ferns, mosses and the occasional birdcall setting the mood before the roar takes over.
- Geological drama – the sheer force of water over millennia is visible in every curve of the rock. It's a textbook example of fluvial erosion and a photographer's dream (bring a wide-angle lens).
- Quick and accessible – the walk is well-formed, suitable for most fitness levels, and can easily be combined with a trip to the glacier itself.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 20–30 minutes for the return walk and time to absorb the chasm from the viewing platform. It's a perfect short stop on the drive to or from Fox Glacier township – plan to arrive early or late in the day to avoid the midday tour-bus crowds and catch the forest light at its best.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Fox Glacier – a 5-minute drive further up the road; book a guided hike or heli-hike for an up-close glacier experience.
- Lake Matheson – 6 km from Fox Glacier township, famous for mirror reflections of Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman at dawn and dusk.
- Gillespies Beach – a wild, black-sand beach 20 minutes from Fox Glacier, with seal colonies and a historic gold-mining trail.
- Franz Josef Glacier – 25 km north, with its own walks, hot pools and heli tours.
