Molesworth Station

Molesworth Station, New Zealand’s largest farm, sprawls across 180,000 hectares of rugged, high-country terrain in the upper South Island. This working cattle station, open to the public only in summer, offers a rare window into a vast, untamed landscape of golden tussock, braided rivers, and dramatic mountain ranges. Driving the Molesworth Tour (via the Acheron Road) is a true backcountry adventure, where you’ll encounter historic homesteads, wild horses, and endless views that feel a world away from the tourist trail.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Dedicate a full day to exploring Molesworth Station. The drive from the Clarence River gate to Hanmer Springs takes around 3–4 hours, including stops for photos and short walks. Combine it with a stay in Hanmer Springs or Blenheim to break up the journey. The station is only open from the Saturday before Labour Day (late October) to Easter Monday each year, so plan your itinerary accordingly.
