Molesworth Station, New Zealand’s largest farm, sprawls across 180,000 hectares of rugged, high-country terrain in the upper South Island. This working cattle station, open to the public only in summer, offers a rare window into a vast, untamed landscape of golden tussock, braided rivers, and dramatic mountain ranges. Driving the Molesworth Tour (via the Acheron Road) is a true backcountry adventure, where you’ll encounter historic homesteads, wild horses, and endless views that feel a world away from the tourist trail.
Highlights & What to See
- Acheron Road Drive: A 4WD-friendly gravel road winding through the station – allow 3–4 hours for the scenic journey from the Clarence River to Hanmer Springs.
- Molesworth Homestead: The historic heart of the station, with original buildings and a small museum telling the story of the Molesworth runholders.
- Wildlife Spotting: Keep an eye out for wild horses, chamois, and the rare New Zealand falcon (kārearea) soaring above the tussock.
- Barefell Pass: A high-country viewpoint offering sweeping panoramas of the Inland Kaikōura Range and the Waiau Toa/Clarence River valley.
- Historic Woolshed: One of the largest in New Zealand, still in use during the summer shearing season.

The station is only open from the Saturday before Labour Day (late October) to Easter Monday each year, so plan your itinerary accordingly.
