Middlemarch is a small, friendly town at the southern end of the Strath Taieri valley, best known as the starting point for the Otago Central Rail Trail. Surrounded by rolling hills and vast skies, this is a place where cyclists and walkers gather, and where the pace of life slows to match the rhythm of the countryside.
Highlights & What to See
- Otago Central Rail Trail: The premier attraction — a 150 km cycling and walking trail following a historic railway line, with tunnels, viaducts, and stunning landscapes. Middlemarch is the perfect starting point.
- Puketapu Hill: A short but rewarding walk offering panoramic views over the Strath Taieri plain and the Rock and Pillar Range.
- The Old Middlemarch Railway Station: A beautifully restored station building that now houses a museum and information centre, capturing the area's rail history.
- Goat Rock: A distinctive limestone outcrop on the outskirts of town, great for a picnic and photo stop.
- Middlemarch Tavern: A classic Kiwi country pub serving hearty meals and cold beer — a favourite refuelling spot for rail trail users.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend one to two nights in Middlemarch, either as the start (or end) of a multi-day rail trail journey. If you're cycling the full trail, allow 4–5 days; for a day trip, you can enjoy a short walk, visit the museum, and have lunch at the tavern. The town itself is compact — an hour or two is enough to explore the main sights.
