Middlemarch is a small, friendly town at the southern end of the Strath Taieri valley, best known as the starting point for the Otago Central Rail Trail. Surrounded by rolling hills and vast skies, this is a place where cyclists and walkers gather, and where the pace of life slows to match the rhythm of the countryside.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend one to two nights in Middlemarch, either as the start (or end) of a multi-day rail trail journey. If you're cycling the full trail, allow 4–5 days; for a day trip, you can enjoy a short walk, visit the museum, and have lunch at the tavern. The town itself is compact — an hour or two is enough to explore the main sights.
