Lake Matheson, just 6 km from Fox Glacier township, is one of New Zealand's most iconic short walks. The mirror-still waters of this dark, tea-coloured lake reflect Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman on calm days, creating a photographer's dream. The easy loop track winds through ancient rimu and kahikatea forest, with boardwalks over wetlands and several viewing platforms. Arrive early morning or late afternoon for the best reflections and softest light.
Highlights & What to See
- Mirror reflections: The famous view of Aoraki/Mount Cook mirrored in the lake is best at dawn on a windless day.
- View of Views jetty: A short side track leads to the best reflection point – come early to beat the crowds.
- Forest boardwalk: The trail passes through dense native forest with ferns, mosses and birdlife like fantails and wood pigeons.
- Lake Matheson Café: A great spot for a coffee or meal with a view after your walk.
- Sunrise photography: The lake is a classic spot for capturing the first light on the Southern Alps.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 1.5–2 hours for the full 4.4 km loop, which takes you around the lake and out to the best viewpoints. If you're keen on photography, plan for extra time at sunrise or sunset. The walk is flat and suitable for most fitness levels, making it a perfect half-day activity from Fox Glacier.
