Perched on the edge of the Southern Alps, Lake Hawea Lookout offers one of New Zealand’s most breathtaking panoramas. From this elevated vantage point, the impossibly blue waters of Lake Hawea stretch out beneath a dramatic amphitheatre of mountains, their peaks often dusted with snow. The lookout is a must-stop on the drive between Wanaka and the West Coast, providing a moment of pure, unfiltered alpine beauty that will have you reaching for your camera before you’ve even stepped out of the car.
Highlights & What to See
- The Viewpoint Itself: The main attraction is the sweeping vista over Lake Hawea and the surrounding peaks. On a calm day, the lake mirrors the sky and mountains, creating a scene of perfect symmetry.
- Lake Hawea: This deep glacial lake is a playground for kayaking, fishing, and boating. In summer, its shores are perfect for a picnic or a refreshing dip.
- Nearby Trails: The Lake Hawea Track and the more challenging Isthmus Peak Track start nearby, offering hikers stunning ridge-line views and a chance to connect with the wild landscape.
- Photography Opportunities: Sunrise and sunset paint the mountains in shades of gold and pink, making this a prime spot for landscape photography. The lookout is also a fantastic place to stargaze on clear nights.
Suggested Time to Spend
You can appreciate the lookout in as little as 15–20 minutes — just enough time to soak in the view and snap some photos. However, if you’re a keen photographer or hiker, budget at least an hour to explore the immediate area or set up for that perfect shot. For those tackling the Isthmus Peak Track, plan for a full day (5–7 hours return).
