Kura Tawhiti, also known as Castle Hill, is a surreal landscape of giant limestone boulders scattered across a grassy basin. This protected area is not only a geological wonder but also a site of deep cultural significance to Ngāi Tahu, who consider it a treasure. The otherworldly rock formations have made it a favourite for climbers, photographers, and anyone who appreciates nature’s artistry. Located about an hour’s drive from Fox Glacier, it’s a perfect detour on your journey through the West Coast.
Highlights & What to See
- Limestone Boulders: Wander among the massive, weathered rocks that seem to have been dropped from the sky. The area is a natural playground for scrambling and photography.
- Rock Climbing: Kura Tawhiti is one of New Zealand’s premier bouldering destinations, with hundreds of problems on the limestone. Even if you don’t climb, watching climbers is a spectacle.
- Scenic Walks: Follow the short track from the car park to the main boulder field, or explore further along the surrounding trails for panoramic views of the Southern Alps.
- Cultural Significance: The site is a wāhi tapu (sacred place) for Ngāi Tahu. Read the interpretive panels to understand its history and respect the area by staying on paths.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 hours exploring the boulder field and taking photos. If you’re a climber or want to hike the longer trails, allow half a day. The site is easily visited as a stop between Fox Glacier and Christchurch, or as a quick detour from State Highway 73.
