Kumara is a tiny, historic gold-mining town on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island, with a population of just a few hundred. It's a classic Kiwi backwater, where time seems to have slowed to a crawl. The main street is lined with well-preserved wooden buildings from the 1860s gold rush era, and the surrounding landscape of dense rainforest and wild rivers feels utterly remote. Despite its size, Kumara has a surprising amount of character, with a couple of excellent pubs and a fascinating gold-dredging history that's still visible in the landscape.
Highlights & What to See
- Kumara Goldfields Heritage Trail: Explore the remains of gold dredges, water races, and historic sites on a self-guided walk or drive. Look for the massive bucket elevator at the site of the Kaniere Dredge.
- Kumara Racecourse: One of the most scenic country racecourses in New Zealand, set against a backdrop of the Southern Alps. Races are held on New Year's Day and other special occasions.
- Historic Kumara Town Centre: Wander past the old post office, the Kumara Hotel (a classic West Coast pub with a great fireplace), and the tiny St. Patrick's Catholic Church.
- Gold Panning: Try your luck in the nearby Taramakau River or at the Goldfields Mining Centre (just south of Kumara) – you might find a speck or two.
- Kumara Beach: A wild, black-sand beach just a short drive west, where you can walk for miles with almost no one else around.
Suggested Time to Spend
Kumara is a quick stop rather than a destination. Spend one to two hours exploring the heritage trail and the town centre. If you're keen on gold panning or a longer walk on the beach, allow half a day. Most visitors pass through on their way between Greymouth and Hokitika or the glaciers.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Hokitika – 30 minutes south, with its vibrant arts scene, beach, and the Hokitika Gorge.
- Greymouth – 25 minutes north, the West Coast's largest town, with the Monteith's Brewery and the left-bank walkway.
- Shantytown Heritage Park – A living-history gold-rush village, just south of Greymouth, perfect for families.
- Lake Brunner – A beautiful lake surrounded by native forest, about 40 minutes east, great for fishing and kayaking.
- Franz Josef & Fox Glaciers – Further south (about 1.5 hours), the iconic glaciers are a must-see if you have time.
