Kaikōura is a dramatic coastal town on New Zealand’s South Island, where the rugged Seaward Kaikōura Range plunges into the Pacific. Famous for its extraordinary marine life—sperm whales, dusky dolphins, and fur seals—this is one of the best places on earth for whale watching. The town itself has a relaxed, small-town feel with a strong Māori heritage, excellent seafood (especially crayfish), and a stunning setting that makes it a must-stop on any South Island road trip.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend 1–2 nights in Kaikōura, which gives you time for a whale-watching tour, a walk on the peninsula, and a seafood dinner. If you’re self-driving, you can comfortably cover the highlights in a day, but staying overnight allows for a sunrise or sunset stroll along the coast. For keen wildlife enthusiasts or photographers, consider two full days to add a dolphin swim or a scenic flight over the mountains.
