Kahurangi National Park is New Zealand’s second-largest national park, a wild expanse of ancient marble mountains, pristine rivers, and remote coastal forests. As one of the country’s most geologically diverse parks, it offers unparalleled hiking through the Heaphy Track (one of the Great Walks) and the chance to see rare alpine plants and the iconic rock wren. This is a place for adventurous souls seeking solitude and raw nature.
Highlights & What to See
- Heaphy Track – A multi-day Great Walk that traverses from the West Coast’s nikau palms to golden beaches and tussock-covered downs, with hut or camping options.
- Oparara Basin – Explore limestone arches, caves, and the famous Oparara Arch, one of the largest natural rock arches in the Southern Hemisphere.
- Mt Arthur Tablelands – A stunning alpine plateau with marble karst landscapes, tarns, and a challenging but rewarding day hike from Flora Saddle.
- Farewell Spit – A nature reserve at the park’s northern tip, a vital bird sanctuary and home to the dramatic Puponga Hill walk.
- Cobb Valley – Remote valley with historic goldmining relics, limestone cliffs, and the beautiful Cobb Reservoir.
- Kahurangi Marine Reserve – Adjacent to the park, offering excellent snorkelling and kayaking around pristine rocky shores.
Suggested Time to Spend
Dedicate at least 2–3 days to experience the park’s highlights. Day-trippers can explore the Oparara Basin or a section of the Heaphy Track, but to truly appreciate the park’s scale and wilderness, plan for a 3–5 day tramp (e.g., the Heaphy Track) or a series of day hikes. Base yourself in Takaka or Karamea for easy access.
