Franz Josef is a compact glacier town on New Zealand's wild West Coast, where the mountains meet the rainforest and the Tasman Sea. The star attraction is the Franz Josef Glacier, a dynamic river of ice that descends from the Southern Alps into temperate rainforest – a rarity worldwide. The town itself is a friendly base with a handful of cafes, bars, and tour operators, all geared towards getting you onto the ice or up in the air.
Highlights & What to See
- Franz Josef Glacier – Walk to the terminal face viewpoint (free, 1.5 km return) or book a heli-hike to walk on the ice and explore blue crevasses. For a bird's-eye view, scenic flights over the glacier and neighbouring Mount Cook are unforgettable.
- Glacier Hot Pools – After a day on the ice, soak in these rainforest-edge thermal pools, surrounded by native ferns. The main pool is 40°C, and there's a cooler 36°C pool.
- West Coast Wildlife Centre – Home to the only public kiwi viewing on the West Coast, plus a conservation programme for the rare rowi kiwi. You can see chicks in the nocturnal house.
- Lake Mapourika – A mirror-still lake just north of town, perfect for kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, or a peaceful picnic with reflections of the glacier.
- Franz Josef Walkway – An easy 1-hour loop through rainforest along the Waiho River, with interpretive signs about the local flora and glacial history.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend one full day and two nights in Franz Josef. Arrive in the afternoon, book a heli-hike or scenic flight for the next morning, then visit the hot pools and wildlife centre. If you're short on time, a half-day stop is enough for the glacier walk and a quick soak, but you'll miss the real magic of the ice.
