Charleston is a tiny, historic gold-mining village on the West Coast, where the rugged Tasman Sea meets lush rainforest. It’s a place of wild beaches, limestone caves, and a palpable sense of frontier history, all wrapped in a quiet, off-the-beaten-path atmosphere that rewards the curious traveller.
Highlights & What to See
- Charleston Cemetery: Wander among weathered headstones dating back to the 1860s gold rush – a poignant window into the lives of early settlers.
- Limestone Caves: Join a guided tour of the nearby Metro Cave / Te Ananui Cave to see glowworms, stalactites, and ancient fossil deposits.
- Pororari River Track: A short, easy walk through nikau palm forest to a tranquil river gorge – perfect for a picnic.
- Beachcombing at Charleston Beach: Search for gemstones like greenstone (pounamu) along the wild, driftwood-strewn shore.
- Historic Town Walk: Follow the interpretive signs around the village to learn about the gold rush, including the site of the former Bank of New Zealand.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is enough to explore the village, visit the cemetery, and take a short walk. If you want to do a cave tour or spend time beachcombing, plan for a full day. Charleston works well as a stopover between Greymouth and Westport, or as a base for exploring the Paparoa National Park.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Paparoa National Park & Pancake Rocks (Punakaiki): Just 30 minutes south, the dramatic layered limestone formations and blowholes are a must-see.
- Westport: 25 minutes north, this town offers the Coaltown Museum, seal colonies at Cape Foulwind, and access to the Buller Gorge.
- Fox Glacier: Further south, but possible as a long day trip if you’re driving the West Coast road – combine with Hokitika and Franz Josef for a multi-day itinerary.
- Greymouth: An hour south, gateway to the Shantytown heritage park and the start of the TranzAlpine train journey.
