Buller Gorge is a dramatic river canyon on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island, carved by the Buller River as it surges through dense native forest and steep cliffs. This wild, rugged landscape is a paradise for thrill-seekers and nature lovers alike, offering everything from swinging bridges to jet boat rides and gold-panning history. The gorge is part of State Highway 6, making it an easy and memorable stop on any West Coast road trip.
Highlights & What to See
- Buller Gorge Swingbridge – Cross one of New Zealand's longest swingbridges (110 m) for heart-pumping views over the river far below. The bridge leads to loop walks through native bush.
- Jet Boat Rides – Zip up the Buller River on a thrilling jet boat tour that spins and weaves through the narrow gorge, with expert drivers pointing out geological features and wildlife.
- Gold Panning – Try your hand at gold panning along the riverbanks; the area was a hotspot during the 1860s gold rush. You can rent pans at the Buller Gorge Swingbridge complex.
- Buller Gorge Walkway – A network of short walks ranging from 10 minutes to an hour, taking you through ancient podocarp forest, past giant ferns, and to viewpoints over the river.
- Historic Mine Sites – Explore remnants of gold-mining operations, including tunnels and water races, that dot the hillsides above the gorge.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 hours at Buller Gorge, enough time to cross the swingbridge, take a short walk, and enjoy a jet boat ride. If you want to do the longer walks and pan for gold, allow half a day. The gorge is best visited as a break between longer drives on the West Coast, for example between Westport and Greymouth.
