Bannockburn

Bannockburn, a tiny gold-mining settlement on the shores of Lake Dunstan, feels like a secret whispered among Central Otago locals. Its dry, rocky landscape, dotted with old stone cottages and rusting mining relics, contrasts sharply with the surrounding vineyards that now thrive in the same soil that once yielded gold. The air is still, the pace slow, and the sense of history palpable — a place where you can almost hear the pickaxes and see the ghosts of Chinese miners shuffling along dusty tracks.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

A half-day is enough to soak up Bannockburn's atmosphere — wander the historic reserve, have a drink at the Red Post, and visit one or two cellar doors. If you're a keen hiker or cyclist, consider overnighting at a nearby vineyard lodge to fully unwind.
