The Banks Peninsula Track is a stunning 4-day, 35-kilometer private walking trail that circles the ancient volcanic crater of Banks Peninsula near Akaroa. This off-the-beaten-path hike offers dramatic coastal cliffs, lush native bush, and secluded beaches, with a strong focus on conservation and local history. Unlike the more famous Great Walks, this track provides a quieter, more intimate experience of New Zealand's wild beauty, with comfortable DOC-style huts and the chance to spot rare Hector's dolphins and penguins.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

The full track is designed for 4 days/3 nights, but fit walkers can complete it in 3 days if they push hard. Most people prefer the 4-day pace to soak in the scenery and wildlife. You'll need to book ahead, as hut capacity is limited (max 16 people per night). The track is open year-round, though winter days are shorter and weather can be unpredictable.
