Arthurs Pass is a rugged alpine village straddling the spine of the Southern Alps, where the road snakes through dramatic river valleys and beech forests. This is New Zealand at its most raw — a place where kea parrots squawk overhead and the air smells of snowmelt and moss. The pass is both a gateway and a destination, offering some of the South Island's most rewarding short walks and mountain vistas.
Highlights & What to See
- Devils Punchbowl Walk — a short, steep climb through rainforest to a thundering 131m waterfall; the spray on your face is worth every step.
- Bealey Valley Track — a gentle riverside stroll with views of snow-capped peaks, perfect for a picnic or a leg-stretch after a long drive.
- Temple Basin Ski Area — a backcountry skier's dream in winter; in summer, the alpine tarns and rock gardens are a hiker's paradise.
- Kea Spotting — these mischievous alpine parrots are notorious for stealing snacks and peering into cars; keep your camera ready and your food hidden.
- Arthur's Pass National Park Visitor Centre — interactive exhibits on local geology, flora, and the legendary kea; pick up track maps and weather updates.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers pass through in a day, stopping for a couple of short walks and a coffee at the village cafe. To truly soak in the alpine atmosphere, spend one night — this lets you tackle a longer tramp like the Avalanche Peak Track (4–6 hours) and watch the sunset paint the mountains gold. Two nights gives you time to explore the Otira Valley or drive the spectacular Arthur's Pass–Otira Gorge road without rushing.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
