Craigieburn Forest Park is a hidden gem in the Southern Alps, offering rugged alpine scenery, pristine beech forests, and world-class outdoor adventures just off the Great Alpine Highway. This park is less crowded than nearby Arthur's Pass National Park but equally stunning, with dramatic limestone bluffs, cascading waterfalls, and crystal-clear rivers. Whether you're a keen tramper, mountain biker, or simply seeking a peaceful picnic spot, Craigieburn delivers a raw, untamed slice of New Zealand's high country.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors explore Craigieburn Forest Park as a half-day detour from Arthur's Pass or Christchurch. If you're driving the Great Alpine Highway, allow at least 2–3 hours to stop at Castle Hill, walk the Broken River Skyline Track to the first viewpoint, and have a picnic. For keen trampers, a full day is ideal to tackle a longer hike like the full Skyline Track or explore the ski field area. The park is also a fantastic overnight stop if you're self-driving, with basic camping options.
