Otaki Forks

Otaki Forks is a rugged gateway to the Tararua Forest Park, offering some of New Zealand’s most challenging and rewarding tramping (hiking) routes. Just an hour north of Wellington, this spot is all about wild rivers, dense native bush, and the thrill of heading into the backcountry. Don’t expect cafes or souvenir shops — come for the raw nature and the sense of adventure.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors come for a day trip from Wellington, allowing 3–4 hours for a short walk and river time. For serious trampers, overnight trips (2–4 days) open up the heart of the Tararuas. If you’re driving from Wellington, budget at least 90 minutes each way, plus time for your chosen activity. The gravel road to the car park is slow — add 20 minutes from Otaki township.
