Otaki Forks
Otaki Forks is a rugged gateway to the Tararua Forest Park, offering some of New Zealand’s most challenging and rewarding tramping (hiking) routes. Just an hour north of Wellington, this spot is all about wild rivers, dense native bush, and the thrill of heading into the backcountry. Don’t expect cafes or souvenir shops — come for the raw nature and the sense of adventure.
Highlights & What to See
- Waitatapia Track – A steep, technical climb that rewards with sweeping views of the Tararua Ranges and Kapiti Coast. Best for experienced hikers.
- Otaki Forks Swing Bridge – The iconic suspension bridge crossing the Otaki River; it’s the starting point for many tramps and a great photo spot.
- Tararua Forest Park – A vast wilderness of alpine peaks, river valleys, and ancient forests. Popular for multi-day tramps like the Southern Crossing.
- River Swimming & Picnicking – On a hot day, the clear Otaki River offers refreshing pools. The grassy areas near the car park are perfect for a picnic.
- Birdwatching – Listen for kākā, tūī, and bellbirds in the forest canopy; early morning is best.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors come for a day trip from Wellington, allowing 3–4 hours for a short walk and river time. For serious trampers, overnight trips (2–4 days) open up the heart of the Tararuas. If you’re driving from Wellington, budget at least 90 minutes each way, plus time for your chosen activity. The gravel road to the car park is slow — add 20 minutes from Otaki township.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Kapiti Coast – Visit the Kapiti Island Nature Reserve for world-class birdwatching, or enjoy the laid-back beach towns of Raumati and Paraparaumu.
- Martinborough – A wine lover’s detour: pinot noir and cellar doors in a charming village setting, about 90 minutes south via the Remutaka Hill Road.
