Kapiti Island

Kapiti Island is a predator-free nature reserve that rises dramatically from the sea off the Kapiti Coast, offering one of New Zealand's most rewarding wildlife encounters. Access is strictly limited to protect the fragile ecosystem, so you'll need to book with one of the two licensed operators who'll ferry you across. The island is a bird-lover's paradise: kākā, takahē, little spotted kiwi, and the raucous kōkako are just a few of the species that thrive here. Walking trails range from easy shoreline strolls to the steep climb to Tūteremoana summit, where panoramic views across Cook Strait will leave you breathless.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors do a day trip, departing around 9am and returning by 3pm – enough time for a guided walk and a self-guided loop. For the full experience, book an overnight stay: you'll arrive in the afternoon, enjoy a guided sunset walk, and depart the next morning after a dawn bird chorus. Overnight trips require early booking, often months ahead.
