Hurunui River

The Hurunui River, slicing through the limestone landscapes of North Canterbury, is a wild and scenic waterway that rewards adventurers with emerald pools, braided gravel beds, and a sense of solitude that feels a world away from the tourist trail. This is a place where the roar of water over rock is the soundtrack, and the air smells of thyme and sun-warmed stone. Whether you're casting a fly for salmon, paddling a kayak through Class II–III rapids, or simply soaking in the views from the Inland Scenic Route, the Hurunui delivers a raw, authentic slice of New Zealand's backcountry.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most travellers spend a half-day to a full day exploring the river corridor. If you're keen on fishing or kayaking, plan for a full day with a picnic. For a scenic drive with short walks, two to three hours is enough to take in the gorge viewpoints and snap photos. Overnight camping is possible at the Hurunui River Mouth or at DOC campsites upstream, which allows for a relaxed evening under the stars.
