Kaikōura, where the mountains meet the sea on New Zealand's South Island east coast, is a wildlife-watching powerhouse wrapped in dramatic scenery. The Kaikōura Ranges rise sheer from the coast, their snowy peaks reflected in the turquoise Pacific. This is one of the best places in the world to see sperm whales, dusky dolphins, and fur seals in the wild, all within a few kilometres of shore. The town itself is small and easygoing, with a handful of excellent seafood spots that make the most of the local crayfish (the 'kōura' in Kaikōura).

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

A minimum of two full days in Kaikōura lets you take a whale-watching tour (half-day) and still have time for the peninsula walk and a seal visit. Three days is ideal if you want to add a dolphin swim or a scenic flight over the ranges. Many visitors arrive from Christchurch (2.5 hours south) and continue north to Blenheim or Picton, making Kaikōura a perfect one- or two-night stop on a South Island road trip.
