Deep beneath the rolling green hills of the Waikato region lies a subterranean world that feels more like a scene from a fantasy novel than a natural phenomenon. The Waitomo Glowworm Caves are a dazzling labyrinth of limestone caverns, underground rivers, and silent chambers illuminated by thousands of tiny, bioluminescent creatures. The star of the show is the Glowworm Grotto, where you glide by boat in absolute darkness, looking up at a canopy of blue-green lights that twinkle like a starry night sky. It’s an otherworldly experience that has captivated visitors for over a century.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Plan for a half-day to fully appreciate the main glowworm cave tour (about 45 minutes) and perhaps one additional cave experience. If you’re keen on black water rafting or exploring Ruakuri Cave, set aside a full day. Many visitors combine a morning at the caves with an afternoon exploring nearby attractions like Hamilton or Hobbiton.
