Turangi is a laid-back town on the southern shores of Lake Taupo, often overlooked by travellers racing between Taupo and Tongariro National Park. But those who stop are rewarded with superb trout fishing, easy access to the Tongariro River, and a genuine small-town vibe. Founded in the 1960s to house workers building a hydroelectric scheme, Turangi today is a quiet base for exploring the region's volcanic landscapes, river trails, and the lake's southern beaches. It's a place where you can cast a line in the morning, hike a short trail in the afternoon, and soak in natural hot pools by evening.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most travellers spend one to two nights in Turangi, using it as a base for the Tongariro Alpine Crossing or for fishing. If you're not tackling the big hike, a single overnight is enough to walk the river trail, dip in the hot pools, and enjoy a meal at one of the local pubs. For anglers, two to three days allows time to fish different beats of the river and explore the lake's southern beaches. The town itself is compact – you can see its main attractions in a few hours.
