Wilkies Pools are a series of crystal-clear rock pools carved into the volcanic bedrock of Mount Taranaki, offering one of the most magical swimming and photography spots in Egmont National Park. Fed by cascading waterfalls and surrounded by lush rainforest, these emerald-hued pools feel like a secret oasis. The short but steep walk to reach them rewards you with pristine water and a sense of utter tranquility.
Highlights & What to See
- Wilkies Pools themselves – swim in the cool, clear waters of the main pool or explore the smaller cascades upstream.
- The walk through ancient forest – a 40-minute (one-way) track through towering rimu and rata trees, often cloaked in moss and ferns.
- Waterfall views – several small waterfalls tumble into the pools, creating a soothing soundtrack and excellent photo ops.
- Mount Taranaki backdrop – on clear days, the mountain looms dramatically above the treeline, visible from parts of the track.
- Wildlife spotting – keep an eye out for native birds like tui, kererū, and fantails flitting through the canopy.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 2–3 hours on the return walk, including time to swim and relax at the pools. If you're keen to explore further, combine it with other short walks in Egmont National Park for a half-day outing. Start early to avoid crowds and catch the best light for photography.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- New Plymouth – 45 minutes north, this coastal city offers art galleries (like Govett-Brewster), the Len Lye Centre, and the Coastal Walkway.
- Mount Taranaki summit – for experienced hikers, a full-day climb to the summit (weather permitting) provides epic views.
- Egmont National Park – explore other tracks like the Dawson Falls, the Goblin Forest, or the Pouakai Circuit for a longer wilderness experience.
