On the wild and windswept Taranaki coast, the Three Sisters and Elephant Rock stand as nature's own sculptures, carved by the relentless Tasman Sea. These striking limestone formations, rising from a beach of dark volcanic sand, are a testament to the raw power of erosion. Accessible only at low tide, the walk to see them is a dramatic encounter with coastal geology and the untamed beauty of New Zealand's west coast.
Highlights & What to See
- Three Sisters: Three towering limestone pillars that rise from the sea, best viewed from the beach at low tide. The light at sunrise and sunset paints them in golden hues.
- Elephant Rock: A massive natural arch that resembles an elephant dipping its trunk into the sea. Walk through it for a unique perspective.
- Low Tide Walk: The only way to reach the formations. Check tide times carefully – you'll need a window of about two hours either side of low tide.
- Fossil Hunting: Keep an eye out for ancient shells and fossils embedded in the limestone cliffs along the beach.
- Nearby Tongaporutu River Mouth: A short walk from the carpark leads to the river mouth, where you can often spot seabirds and, in season, the rare New Zealand dotterel.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for 1–2 hours, including the walk from the carpark (15 minutes each way) and time to explore the formations. Time your visit with low tide and consider arriving an hour before low tide to have the fullest window. Combine with a stop at the nearby Tongaporutu township for a coffee or a look at the historic bridge.
