Pukekura Park is a lush, 52-hectare botanical wonderland in the heart of New Plymouth, offering a serene escape with its fernery, rhododendron dell, and the iconic Festival of Lights. This Victorian-era park is a masterpiece of landscape design, blending native and exotic plants around a series of man-made lakes and streams. It's a place where you can wander for hours, discovering hidden grottoes, a cricket ground, and even a mini train that chugs through the park on weekends.
Highlights & What to See
- Main Fernery: A stunning collection of native ferns, with a waterfall and cave-like grotto that feels like a prehistoric rainforest.
- Rhododendron Dell: Bursting with colour in spring (September–November), this hillside garden is a photographer's dream.
- The Lakes: Two mirror-like lakes connected by a stream, where you can feed ducks and spot eels. The upper lake has a charming boathouse.
- Festival of Lights: From mid-December to early February, the park transforms into a magical wonderland of illuminated displays, music, and family-friendly events.
- Miniature Railway: A 7¼-inch gauge railway that runs on weekends and public holidays, offering a fun 1.5 km ride through the park.
- Tea House & Botanic Garden Café: Perfect for a cuppa and a scone while overlooking the main lake.
- New Plymouth: The park is just a 10-minute walk from the city centre, making it easy to combine with a visit to the coastal walkway or the Len Lye Centre.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for at least 2–3 hours to explore the park at a leisurely pace. If you're visiting during the Festival of Lights, allow an evening for the full experience. Many visitors combine a morning at the park with an afternoon exploring New Plymouth's galleries and cafes.
