Perched on the edge of the Ahukawakawa Swamp, Pouakai Hut offers one of the most iconic overnight stays in Egmont National Park. This historic 24-bunk hut, built in 1968, sits at 1,200 m on the slopes of the Pouakai Range, with sweeping views of Mount Taranaki — especially magical at sunset and sunrise. It’s the perfect base for trampers wanting to tackle the Pouakai Circuit or summit Mount Taranaki without rushing back to the car park.
Highlights & What to See
- Pouakai Circuit: A 2–3 day loop that circles the Pouakai Range, taking in tussock plateaus, alpine wetlands, and the incredible reflection of Mount Taranaki in the tarns near the hut.
- Ahukawakawa Swamp: A rare high-altitude bog boardwalk just steps from the hut, where you can spot sundews and orchids amid the misty, otherworldly landscape.
- Mount Taranaki summit attempt: From Pouakai Hut it’s a challenging 6–8 hour return via the Kokowai Track and the Taranaki Summit Track — start early for clear views.
- Sunset & sunrise photography: The classic shot of Taranaki reflected in the tarn is best captured from the ridge above the hut during golden hour.
- Wildlife spotting: Keep an eye out for the North Island robin (toutouwai) and the rare blue duck (whio) along the streams.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend one night at Pouakai Hut as part of the 2–3 day Pouakai Circuit. If you’re just doing a day hike from the Mangorei Track car park, allow 6–8 hours return to the hut and back — but you’ll want to stay over to catch the light. For a relaxed pace, book two nights: arrive in the afternoon, explore the swamp at dusk, summit Taranaki the next day, and hike out on day three.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Mount Taranaki — New Zealand’s most symmetrical volcano, offering summit climbs and the stunning Dawson Falls area. Combine with Pouakai Hut for a multi-day alpine adventure.
- Egmont National Park — the entire park is a network of tracks, waterfalls, and lush rainforest. The North Egmont Visitor Centre is a great starting point for shorter walks.
