Few tramps in New Zealand pack as much drama into a single day as the Pouakai Circuit. This 25 km loop in Egmont National Park delivers you to the very foot of the majestic Mount Taranaki, with a series of mirror-still tarns that capture the mountain’s perfect reflection on calm days. The trail winds through ancient goblin forests draped in moss, across alpine herb fields, and past the eerie, twisted shapes of the Ahukawakawa Swamp. It’s a quintessential New Zealand alpine experience that feels both wild and accessible.
Highlights & What to See
- Pouakai Tarns: The iconic photo spot — a series of small tarns that reflect Mount Taranaki on a clear day. Arrive early for calm water and golden light.
- Ahukawakawa Swamp: An otherworldly alpine wetland with boardwalks, home to rare plants and surrounded by steep volcanic ridges.
- Bells Falls: A spectacular 30-metre waterfall cascading through a narrow gorge, best visited on the western side of the circuit.
- Goblin Forest: A section of the trail where kamahi trees are thickly draped in moss and lichen, creating a Tolkienesque atmosphere.
- Panorama of Mount Taranaki: From the saddle near the tarns, you get an uninterrupted view of the mountain’s symmetrical cone — a sight that rivals any in New Zealand.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most trampers complete the circuit in a full day (8–10 hours), but the experience is far richer as an overnight trip. Use the Pouakai Hut (bookable via DOC) to split the walk into two relaxed days, allowing time for photography, side trips, and soaking in the alpine atmosphere. If you’re a fast walker, you can finish in a long day, but allow for variable weather — the mountain creates its own microclimate, and conditions can change rapidly.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- New Plymouth: The vibrant coastal city at the foot of the mountain, with excellent cafes, the Len Lye Centre, and the Coastal Walkway.
- Mount Taranaki Summit: For experienced alpine climbers, the summit ascent is a challenging but rewarding extension (requires gear and good conditions).
- Egmont National Park: The park offers many shorter walks, including the Dawson Falls and the Wilkies Pools loop, perfect for a rest day.
