Pouakai Circuit

Few tramps in New Zealand pack as much drama into a single day as the Pouakai Circuit. This 25 km loop in Egmont National Park delivers you to the very foot of the majestic Mount Taranaki, with a series of mirror-still tarns that capture the mountain’s perfect reflection on calm days. The trail winds through ancient goblin forests draped in moss, across alpine herb fields, and past the eerie, twisted shapes of the Ahukawakawa Swamp. It’s a quintessential New Zealand alpine experience that feels both wild and accessible.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most trampers complete the circuit in a full day (8–10 hours), but the experience is far richer as an overnight trip. Use the Pouakai Hut (bookable via DOC) to split the walk into two relaxed days, allowing time for photography, side trips, and soaking in the alpine atmosphere. If you’re a fast walker, you can finish in a long day, but allow for variable weather — the mountain creates its own microclimate, and conditions can change rapidly.
