Opunake

Opunake is a laid-back coastal town on Taranaki's surf-battered west coast, where black-sand beaches meet a dramatic volcanic backdrop. With a strong Māori heritage and a thriving surf culture, it's the kind of place where you can spend the morning riding waves and the afternoon exploring historic pā sites. The town's compact centre has a handful of cafes and fish-and-chip shops, but the real draw is the raw, untamed coastline and the ever-present silhouette of Mount Taranaki.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors come for a day trip from New Plymouth (about 40 minutes north) or as a stop on a coastal drive. Half a day is enough to walk the beach, grab a coffee, and explore the walkway. Surfers might want to stay longer – there are a couple of basic holiday parks and baches for overnight stays, but don't expect a big resort scene.
