Opunake is a laid-back coastal town on Taranaki's surf-battered west coast, where black-sand beaches meet a dramatic volcanic backdrop. With a strong Māori heritage and a thriving surf culture, it's the kind of place where you can spend the morning riding waves and the afternoon exploring historic pā sites. The town's compact centre has a handful of cafes and fish-and-chip shops, but the real draw is the raw, untamed coastline and the ever-present silhouette of Mount Taranaki.
Highlights & What to See
- Opunake Beach – A long stretch of black volcanic sand popular with surfers; great for swimming when conditions are calm, but always respect the rips.
- Te Puna Te Ao Mārama (Opunake Library & Community Centre) – A striking modern building that also houses a local museum with exhibits on Māori history and the region's dairy farming past.
- Opunake Walkway – A coastal path that hugs the cliffs between Opunake and the neighbouring settlement of Ōeo, offering stunning views of the Tasman Sea and Mount Taranaki.
- Ōeo Surf Break – Just south of town, this is one of Taranaki's most consistent and challenging left-hand breaks, known to host national surfing competitions.
- Historic Pā Sites – Several fortified Māori settlements dot the coastline, including the well-preserved Te Puia Pā near Ōeo, where you can see terraces and pits.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors come for a day trip from New Plymouth (about 40 minutes north) or as a stop on a coastal drive. Half a day is enough to walk the beach, grab a coffee, and explore the walkway. Surfers might want to stay longer – there are a couple of basic holiday parks and baches for overnight stays, but don't expect a big resort scene.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- New Plymouth – The region's hub, with the Len Lye Centre, Pukekura Park, and a lively food scene.
- Mount Taranaki – The iconic volcano offers superb hiking, from short walks to multiday crossings.
- Egmont National Park – Dense rainforest trails, waterfalls, and alpine meadows wrap around the mountain's slopes.
