New Plymouth is a vibrant coastal city on the western edge of the North Island, where the Tasman Sea meets the dramatic cone of Mount Taranaki. With its rich Māori and European heritage, a thriving arts scene, and a stunning natural backdrop, this is a place that rewards slow exploration. The city’s laid-back vibe, excellent cafes, and the famous Len Lye Centre make it a must-stop on any Taranaki road trip.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Two to three days is ideal for New Plymouth. Spend your first day exploring the city’s art galleries, Pukekura Park, and the Coastal Walkway. Use the second day for a hike in Egmont National Park, either the Pouakai Crossing (6–8 hours) or a shorter walk to Dawson Falls. A third day allows for a leisurely drive around the mountain or a visit to the nearby Surf Highway 45.
