Rising in perfect isolation from the lush Taranaki farmland, Egmont National Park is dominated by the near-symmetrical cone of Mount Taranaki. This dormant volcano is one of New Zealand's most iconic natural landmarks, and the park surrounding it offers a wealth of hiking, waterfalls, and dense rainforest. The mountain's moody, cloud-wreatded presence creates a dramatic backdrop for any visit, whether you're tackling the summit or simply enjoying the views from the many walking tracks in the park.
Highlights & What to See
- Mount Taranaki Summit: A challenging day hike (8–10 hours return) for experienced trampers, with stunning views from the crater rim. Ice axes and crampons may be needed in winter.
- Dawson Falls: A beautiful 18m waterfall accessible via a short walk from the Dawson Falls Visitor Centre, with several other cascades nearby.
- Goblin Forest: An eerie, moss-draped forest along the Pouakai Circuit, named for its twisted, lichen-covered kamahi trees.
- Pouakai Circuit: A 2–3 day loop track that circles the mountain through subalpine tussock and ancient forest, with excellent hut accommodation.
- North Egmont Visitor Centre: Start point for many walks, including the short, wheelchair-accessible Puffer Track with panoramic views.
- Wilkie's Pools: A series of crystal-clear rock pools and small waterfalls, perfect for a refreshing dip on a warm day.
Suggested Time to Spend
You can appreciate the park's beauty in a day by driving the Egmont Road to the North Egmont Visitor Centre and taking a few short walks. For a more immersive experience, plan for at least two to three days to hike the Pouakai Circuit or attempt the summit. If you're short on time, a half-day visit to the Dawson Falls area is still rewarding.
