Queenstown is New Zealand's adventure capital, set dramatically on the shores of Lake Wakatipu and ringed by the jagged peaks of The Remarkables. It's a place where adrenaline meets alpine luxury — think bungy jumping, jet-boating, and world-class skiing, but also fine dining, exceptional wine, and serene lake cruises. The town pulses with energy year-round, yet you can always find a quiet trail or a hidden bay to escape the buzz.
Highlights & What to See
- Bungy Jumping at Kawarau Bridge — The world's first commercial bungy site; even if you don't jump, watching others take the plunge is thrilling.
- Skyline Queenstown & Luge — Take the gondola up Bob’s Peak for panoramic lake-and-mountain views, then ride the luge for a family-friendly adrenaline hit.
- Milford Sound Day Trip — A long but unforgettable cruise through towering fiords (book ahead).
- Glenorchy — This tiny lakeside settlement is the gateway to Paradise and a favourite for Lord of the Rings scenery.
- Arrowtown — A charming gold-rush village 20 minutes away, with historic cottages, autumn colours, and a great Sunday market.
- Lake Wakatipu Cruises — Hop on the vintage steamship TSS Earnslaw or a modern catamaran for a relaxed water-level perspective.
- Wine Tasting in Gibbston Valley — Just east of town, this region produces excellent Pinot Noir; many cellar doors offer tastings with mountain views.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers find 3–4 days ideal for Queenstown itself, allowing time for one big adventure activity, a day exploring Arrowtown and Gibbston, and a day on the lake or a scenic flight. If you plan to add Milford Sound or a multi-day hike like the Routeburn, budget at least 5–6 days. In winter, skiers often stay a week to hit the slopes at The Remarkables and Coronet Peak.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Invercargill — A relaxed city 2 hours south, with art deco architecture and the excellent Bill Richardson Transport World museum.
- Stewart Island — A 3-hour drive plus ferry from Bluff; a pristine haven for birdlife, hiking, and quiet bays.
- The Catlins — Rugged coastline with waterfalls, sea lions, and the famous Nugget Point lighthouse; a great 1–2 day road trip loop.
- Bluff — The southern end of State Highway 1, known for its iconic signpost and fresh oysters. Combine with Stewart Island.
