Treble Cone is the South Island’s largest ski area, known for its long, steep groomers, off-piste terrain, and jaw-dropping views over Lake Wānaka and the Southern Alps. It’s a magnet for advanced and intermediate skiers and snowboarders who crave wide-open bowls and uncrowded slopes, yet it also offers beginner-friendly areas. The remote, high-alpine feel is a world away from resort-town bustle, making it a must for powder hounds visiting the Wānaka region.
Highlights & What to See
- Home Basin & Summit Saddle: The main basin offers excellent intermediate cruising, while the summit saddle opens up advanced chutes and steep faces for experts.
- Off-Piste and Backcountry Access: Treble Cone is famous for its sidecountry; guided tours from the summit lead to vast, untracked bowls like Motatapu Chutes and the backcountry beyond.
- Lake Wānaka Views: On a clear day, the panorama from the top of the six-seater chairlift is unforgettable — turquoise water framed by snow-capped peaks.
- Terrain Park: A smaller but well-maintained park with jumps and rails for freestylers, plus natural features scattered across the mountain.
- Base Lodge & Café: The on-mountain café serves hearty New Zealand fare (think pies, hot chocolate, and craft beer) with sunny deck seating.
Suggested Time to Spend
Dedicate a full day (or two) to explore the mountain properly. The drive from Wānaka takes about 35 minutes up a winding gravel road, so aim to arrive by 9am to secure parking and get first tracks. If you’re a strong skier, a single day can cover the main runs, but powder chasers will want a multi-day pass to chase fresh snow. Combine with a rest day in Wānaka to soak tired muscles.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Wānaka Town: A vibrant lakeside hub with excellent cafés, restaurants, and the famous That Wanaka Tree photo spot.
- Cardrona Alpine Resort: Just 20 minutes from Treble Cone, this family-friendly ski field offers a different vibe with a huge terrain park and wide cruisers.
- Roys Peak Track: A challenging day hike (summer only) with one of New Zealand’s most photographed views over Lake Wānaka.
- Mount Aspiring National Park: For non-ski days, explore glacier valleys, waterfalls, and short walks like the Rob Roy Glacier Track.
- Lake Hāwea: A quieter lake 15 minutes south, perfect for a scenic drive or a peaceful picnic.
