Thunder Creek Falls is a spectacular roadside waterfall on the Haast Pass Highway, plunging 96 metres in a single dramatic drop. The sheer power of the water crashing into the pool below creates a constant roar that lives up to the name. A short, easy walk through lush native beech forest leads to the viewing platform, where you can feel the spray on your face. This is a perfect quick stop to stretch your legs and soak in the raw beauty of the West Coast wilderness.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow 20–30 minutes to park, walk to the viewing platform, and take photos. The walk is short and flat, so it’s easy to fit into a day of driving along the Haast Pass. Many travellers stop here as a break between Wanaka and the West Coast, so it works well as a 15-minute leg-stretch.
