Snow Farm NZ is New Zealand's only dedicated cross-country ski field, a serene winter wonderland set on the Pisa Range above Wanaka. With over 50 km of groomed trails winding through golden tussock and frosty beech forest, it offers a pristine, crowd-free alternative to the alpine resorts. Whether you're a classic skier, skate skier, or snowshoer, the silence and big-sky views of the Southern Alps make every glide feel like a backcountry escape.
Highlights & What to See
- Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing: Explore miles of groomed trails for all abilities, from gentle loops to challenging climbs with panoramic views.
- Pisa Range scenery: Sweeping vistas of the Southern Alps, Lake Wanaka, and the Cardrona Valley from the high plateau.
- Snow Farm Yurt Café: Warm up with mulled wine, hot chocolate, or hearty soups in a cozy yurt perched at 1,580 metres.
- Night skiing under the stars: Select Friday and Saturday evenings offer floodlit trails and a magical alpine atmosphere.
- Roys Peak and That Wanaka Tree: Combine a day at Snow Farm with Wanaka's iconic hiking landmark and famous lakeside photo spot.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan at least a full day to make the most of Snow Farm. Arrive early (access is via a 30-minute gravel road from Wanaka) to enjoy the quiet morning trails, break for lunch at the yurt, and ski into the afternoon. If you're new to cross-country, a half-day lesson plus practice is enough to get a feel. For serious skiers, two days let you tackle the full network and try night skiing. Snow Farm operates from late June to early October, weather permitting.
