Roys Peak is one of New Zealand's most iconic day hikes, offering a jaw-dropping panorama of Lake Wānaka, the Southern Alps, and the braided Matukituki River. The steep but well-maintained trail climbs through tussock-covered slopes to a dramatic ridgeline viewpoint that has become a must-photograph spot. This is a classic New Zealand alpine experience that rewards early risers with soft morning light and fewer crowds.
Highlights & What to See
- The summit viewpoint – an epic 360° vista over Lake Wānaka, the glacier-carved valley, and peaks like Mount Aspiring. It's the ultimate photo op.
- Alpine flora and birdlife – keep an eye out for kea (mountain parrots) and the delicate mountain daisies that bloom in summer.
- Sunrise or sunset hike – the golden hour transforms the landscape; headlamps are essential for a pre-dawn start.
- Tussock-covered switchbacks – the relentless climb is part of the experience, with ever-expanding views that make each step worthwhile.
- That Wānaka Tree – after your hike, visit the famous lone willow tree in Lake Wānaka, just a short drive away.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most hikers need 5–7 hours return, covering 16 km with 1,200 m of elevation gain. Start very early (pre-dawn in summer) to avoid the midday heat and crowds at the summit. The climb is relentless, so pace yourself and carry plenty of water. If you're short on time, you can still enjoy the lower slopes for a shorter walk.
