Rob Roy Glacier Walk is a spectacular day hike in Mount Aspiring National Park, offering an up-close encounter with a hanging glacier and cascading waterfalls. The track winds through lush native beech forest, crosses swing bridges over turquoise streams, and ends at a viewpoint where you can watch ice and rock tumble from the glacier face.
Highlights & What to See
- Glacier Viewpoint: The trail culminates at a rocky lookout directly opposite the Rob Roy Glacier, where you can hear the creak and thunder of icefalls and see waterfalls plunging from the ice.
- Beech Forest: The lower section passes through ancient red and silver beech trees, with ferns and mosses carpeting the forest floor.
- Swing Bridges: Cross two suspension bridges over the Rob Roy Stream, offering dramatic views of the gorge and waterfalls.
- Waterfalls: Several cascades tumble down the valley walls, especially after rain, adding to the sense of raw alpine power.
- Alpine Meadows: Above the treeline, the track opens to tussock and rock fields with views up the valley to the glacier.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 3–4 hours for the return walk (10 km / 6.2 miles). The track is well graded and suitable for most fitness levels, though the final section is steep and rocky. Start early in the morning to catch the best light on the glacier and avoid afternoon cloud cover. Combine with a half-day visit to Wanaka township or a drive along the Matukituki Valley.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Wanaka: The charming lakeside town offers cafes, restaurants, and the famous Wanaka Tree photo spot.
