Wild, windswept and wonderfully untamed, the Otago Peninsula juts into the Pacific like a living sanctuary. Just a short drive from Dunedin, this narrow finger of land is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts and those seeking dramatic coastal scenery. Here, albatross soar above cliffs, sea lions haul out on golden beaches, and penguins shuffle home at dusk. The peninsula’s rugged beauty and conservation success stories make it an unforgettable stop on any South Island itinerary.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

To truly experience the peninsula, allow at least a full day. Start early at Taiaroa Head (book the albatross tour in advance), then explore Larnach Castle and its gardens. Spend the late afternoon at Penguin Place or Sandfly Bay, and finish with the little blue penguin return at Pilot’s Beach. If you’re short on time, a half-day focused on Taiaroa Head and one wildlife beach is still rewarding.
